چکیده

The pretreatment is one of the critical steps in influencing the reaction efficiency of cellulose. In this article, several pretreatment methods of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) are presented: the ultrasonic, sodium hydroxide and 1-butyl3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl) dissolution treatment, and the reactivity of cellulose to a TEMPO-NaClONaBr oxidation system is investigated. The treated cellulose is characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and FTIR. Comparing the three pretreatment methods, the ionic liquid pretreatment does not destroy cellulose I and greatly reduces crystallinity, while enhancing the reactivity of cellulose.

Complete chemical hydrolysis of cellulose into fermentable sugars through ionic liquids and antisolvent pretreatments.

This work describes a relatively simple methodology for efficiently deconstructing cellulose into monomeric glucose, which is more easily transformed into a variety of platform molecules for the production of chemicals and fuels. The approach undertaken herein first involves the dissolution of cellulose in an ionic liquid (IL), followed by a second reconstruction step aided by an antisolvent. T...

Comparison of dilute acid and ionic liquid pretreatment of switchgrass: Biomass recalcitrance, delignification and enzymatic saccharification.

The efficiency of two biomass pretreatment technologies, dilute acid hydrolysis and dissolution in an ionic liquid, are compared in terms of delignification, saccharification efficiency and saccharide yields with switchgrass serving as a model bioenergy crop. When subject to ionic liquid pretreatment (dissolution and precipitation of cellulose by anti-solvent) switchgrass exhibited reduced cell...

Mitigation of cellulose recalcitrance to enzymatic hydrolysis by ionic liquid pretreatment.

Efficient hydrolysis of cellulose-to-glucose is critically important in producing fuels and chemicals from renewable feedstocks. Cellulose hydrolysis in aqueous media suffers from slow reaction rates because cellulose is a water-insoluble crystalline biopolymer. The high-crystallinity of cellulose fibrils renders the internal surface of cellulose inaccessible to the hydrolyzing enzymes (cellula...

Enhancement of cellulose saccharification kinetics using an ionic liquid pretreatment step.

Hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose in aqueous media catalyzed by the cellulase enzyme system suffers from slow reaction rates due in large part to the highly crystalline structure of cellulose and inaccessibility of enzyme adsorption sites. In this study, an attempt was made to disrupt the cellulose structure using the ionic liquid (IL), 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, in a cellulose re...

ARTICLE Visualization of Biomass Solubilization and Cellulose Regeneration During Ionic Liquid Pretreatment of Switchgrass

Auto-fluorescent mapping of plant cell walls was used to visualize cellulose and lignin in pristine switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) stems to determine the mechanisms of biomass dissolution during ionic liquid pretreatment. The addition of ground switchgrass to the ionic liquid 1-n-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate resulted in the disruption and solubilization of the plant cell wall at mild tempe...
